Expectations for Dentures and Removable Partial Dentures
– A new denture or removable partial denture always requires a period of adjustment, this may require several weeks so be patient and stay committed
– Wear your denture or removable partial denture as instructed by Dr. Kaur
– If the denture or removable partial denture is causing tissue inflammation, mouth sores, tooth pain or sensitivity, call our office to schedule an appointment for evaluation/adjustment
– Speech may be altered with the wear of a denture or removable partial denture, this does require time for adaptation facial muscles, tongue, and lips
– Dentures and removable partial dentures do not have the same chewing efficiency as natural teeth and may affect the taste of food.
– If your bite feels uneven after several days of wear, call to schedule an adjustment appointment
– Over time, or with weight loss or gain, the supporting gum tissue and bone may change shape and size affecting the fit of your denture or removable partial denture
– Periodic relines of your denture or removable partial denture may be necessary to ensure a retentive fit.
– Denture teeth may wear or chip over time
– Be sure to bring your denture or removable partial denture your dental check-up/cleaning appointments so the fit can be evaluated
Cleaning your Denture or Removable Partial Denture
Proper cleaning of your denture or removable partial denture is important to prevent stains and bacteria from accumulating on your appliance which can lead to foul smell or taste, gum infection, and risk of tooth decay
– After eating, rinse your mouth and denture or removable partial denture with water
– Thoroughly brush (soft tooth brush) your teeth, gums and denture or removable partial denture in the morning and before bed at night
• Do not use toothpaste, as it is abrasive and can create damage
• Do not use hot water to clean or soak denture or removable partial denture, it can alter your denture or removable partial denture and affect the fit
– Every 2-4 weeks, soak denture or removable partial denture in an equal mix of white vinegar and water for 15 minutes to reduce stain and retained bacteria/yeast
– Do not wear your denture to bed, it is important to allow your gum tissue and jaw bone to rest in order to prevent tissue irritation, bacterial and yeast overgrowth, and jaw bone changes
– When not wearing the denture or removable partial denture, store in case provided
Immediate Denture or Immediate Removable Partial Denture
– Follow all post-operative instructions from your oral surgeon/periodontist
– Do not remove the denture or removable partial denture for the first 24 hours after tooth removal
– Remove the denture after 24 hours and clean using proper care instructions provided by the surgeon/periodontist
– Schedule follow up appointments with surgeon/periodontist
– Over time, your denture or removable partial denture will loosen up as your gums and bone heal
– A reline, rebase, or new denture/removable partial denture will be needed in 6 months to 1 year
