Expectations for Orthodontic Retainers/Night Guard Appliances

– New orthodontic retainers or night guard appliances always require a period of adjustment, this may require several weeks so be patient and stay committed

– If after 7-10 days of wear the orthodontic retainer or night guard appliance is causing tooth sensitivity or tissue inflammation, call our office to schedule an appointment for evaluation/adjustment

– Wear your orthodontic retainers or night guard appliance as instructed by Dr. Kaur and Team TKDDS

– If the orthodontic retainer or night guard appliance becomes tight over time or is not fitting around your teeth properly, call our office to schedule an appointment for evaluation/adjustment

– The average lifetime of most orthodontic retainers and night guard appliances is 3-5 years

– Remember to bring your orthodontic retainers and night guard appliances to dental check-ups to ensure proper fit and function

Cleaning and Maintenance

Proper cleaning of orthodontic retainers and night guard appliances is important to prevent stains and bacteria from accumulating on your appliance which can lead to foul smell or taste, gum infection, and risk of tooth decay

– Thoroughly brush (soft tooth brush) orthodontic retainers and night guard appliances in the morning and before bed at night
• Do not use toothpaste, as it is abrasive and can create damage
• Do not use hot water to clean or soak, it can alter your orthodontic retainers and night guard appliance which may and affect the fit

– Every 2-4 weeks, soak orthodontic retainers and night guard appliances in an equal mix of white vinegar and water for 15 minutes to reduce stain and retained bacteria/yeast

– When not wearing orthodontic retainers or night guard appliances, store in case provided
